How red light therapy can help muscle and joint pain.
The daily use of red and near infrared lights can reduce muscle overuse pain and provide protection when exercise is planned.
Red lights can be used to pre-condition muscles prior to a major workout (and this includes working in the garden), thus increasing endurance and reducing the risk of injury. Elite athletes use red light as part of their warm-up routine for precisely this reason.
Red and near infrared lights also soften muscles and reduce the stiffness that make moving so difficult.
The most useful device for muscle and joint pain is the Therapad.
Once the pain eases and the sore spot is less bothersome, there is a tendency to forget to use the lights. This isn’t a good idea as it works best if you can incorporate it into your daily routine. It’s been shown to be very useful to prime the muscles before exercise, reducing the risk of further injury and it is also useful after exercise to tamp down any inflammation from microscopic muscle tears.
Wound healing
There is considerable evidence supporting the role of visible red light (660-670nm) in speeding up wound healing - this includes chronic ulcers – and reducing pain.
The TheraPad is the best device to use, on the 660nm setting.
